in a rush to wait

Why is it that people often seem to be in such a rush? It's like people always have somewhere they need to be five minutes ago. And people become very rude when they're in a rush. They'll cut you off or curse you out! But the aspect of being in a rush that humors me and that I want to deal with in this blog entry is that most of the time people are in a rush, they are then left waiting anyway. "I want to hurry up and wait." Let me give some examples:
  1. When an airline employee calls for a flight to be boarded, people jump up and hurry to the gate. (some are already standing nearby waiting for the call.) Then they wait in line. Then they get to board the plane sooner than others. Once on the plane that they rushed onto, they get to wait...and wait...and wait. Do people realize they will not make it to their destination before the others on their flight?
  2. People rush to make it to the doctor's on time, where they will wait for 30 minutes before the doctor sees them.
  3. People will not let you merge into traffic because they have to hurry up TO THE RED LIGHT!!! They can't get to the red light they'll wait at quick enough. (I really hate this one!)
  4. Scientists rush to pull samples, so they can wait three weeks for the results.

This is the way of the world I guess. I just find it a little amusing.

Well, as a rusher (which for the most part is terrible), the reason that people rush around to wait is that if they get there any later, the results they are looking for will be later (if that makes any sense - we have to remember this is coming from Leah Land). For instance, if someone were to file for unemployment, you could say, "Whats the rush, its gonna take a month to see a check anyway" This is true, but it is a month from the time you file, so if you wait two weeks, it could end up taking six weeks before you see any of that money. Granted it will be a a back pay check, but only from the day you apply and it doesn't help when you need to get diapers or pay your rent.

Another example... I'll use one that you used. Doctors, getting rushing to get labs in. If it is already a three week wait, then if they wait a week, it will be a 4 week wait for the patient.

But with the rushing to the red light scenario, I completely agree with you (although I am guilty of this). It is stupid. A person driving the speed limit can get to the same red light that the person speeding and cutting people off. I just have to remind myself of this when I am late (which is pretty often).

Hope I made sense!

The example dealt with scientific research and not patient lab work. The unemployment is different territory altogether. I'm talking about rushing when rushing does no good.

If I go to the doctor and have a 4:00 appointment, the doctor will likely see me by 4:15-4:30. So why show up at 3:30. It will not change anything.

This is true. However, I did learn that at the UMASS primary care office, if it is an appt first thing in the a.m. and you show up early, they will send you right in. Kinda cool. So now I always schedule appts when they first open. But I do understand what you are saying. Some people, like me, have a problem with being on time and therefore they rush around. And there are others I think that are just addicted to be early.

Hi. I think your right. You should not wait all the time. Example,I should not wait 10 minutes to get out of kids church. Tell your wife as soon as possible.

Rushing around is stressful!! being late is even more stressful for me, because I don't like to put people out. The question I always ask myself is: "am I rushing around because I didn't give myself enough time....ie.... lazy Dianna?" OR "Have i overcommitted myself & the things I am trying to accomplish in a day are unrealistic?" Usually, it's a combination of both for me. That, and wasting time on senseless things like posting to this blog instaed of cleaning my house.
