- Adoniram Judson was born there. Mr. Judson was the first missionary sent from the United States.
- Malden is the birthplace of Grandpa Joe from the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" movie.
- Malden officially became a town in 1649. I was there for the 350th birthday parade celebration. In fact, I was in it!
- It has been said that Malden was the first town to petition the colonial government to withdraw from Great Britain.
I can spew much more useless knowledge about my city. But I can also tell you some not so nice things I remember:
- I once saw a kid get beat to death with a baseball bat while driving to church.
- A guy on the street over from me when I lived on Essex Street was found beheaded in his jeep. His head was later found in a cemetery.
- A guy on my brother's paper route (the street next to ours when we lived on Echo St) went missing while jogging and was never found.
- The body of a young man was found in the cemetery down the street from my house on Echo St.
- One of the most famous armored car robbery cases in history involved Malden.
- A few years back, there was a big standoff in Malden involving a separate armored car robbery case.
- When I lived on Russell St., neighborhood kids used to come into my backyard (it was a duplex so it was shared) to drink and do drugs with my neighbor.
There are so many more bad things I can think of. One which only my brother, a few select people, and me know, which I'd rather not air publicly.
I loved Malden growing up. I love Malden still. I just don't think that I would call it the best place to raise a child. Which begs the question, "How did Malden win the honors of being named the best city in Massachusetts to raise children?"
The honors came from Business Week and the article can read by clicking here So why did Malden win? I think that it has a lot to do with the fact that Malden has all beautiful, new, well-equipped K-8 schools. Only the High School is old. I think the reason Malden was the beneficiary of brand new schools a few years back was because Malden is the home for the State Board of Education. It's kind of like the old saying about the smoothest road in a city being the one the mayor lives on. The best schools in the state are where the State Board of Education resides. I'm happy for Malden that it won this honor. I just feel the need to disagree. And that's coming from a child who was raised there.

I've seen 'The Departed,' 'Gone Baby Gone' 'Mystic River' and 'Goodwill Hunting.' So I'm basically an expert on Boston life and crime.
Haha. All good movies by the way. Check out Monument Ave. It stars Martin Sheen and was filmed in Malden.
Haha...Kevin, that cracked me up.
This story about Malden was in the news today.

I could'nt say that I grew up in one place. Me and my family have moved a lot. We first lived in webster. Then we moved to charlton. Then to oxford ( not the shoe) and finaly to wales. I like everywhere.
Ello. I undersztand zat you are a very good perzon. My fiend Cazzidy told me. I like your blog.
Ok so I must say that I tend to agree with Mike on this one.... the reason Malden got 5 brand new state of the art schools is because they applied for a state grant in which the state paid 90% and the city 10%... so this recognition is dedicated to the taxpayers in Massachusetts that made it possible.... this blog could have gone on and on with negativities about Malden... but on a more serious note I do believe that Mayor Richard Howard, who has been in that position atleast 12 years now, has done great things in Malden to turn it around... Even the news reporters couldn't help a little chuckle as they were reporting the story... Congrats Malden, but there is NO WAY I am raising a child there!!!!!!!!!!!!
o and btw... I met Dennis Leary and got to hold an umbrella for Martin Sheen during the filming of Monument Ave... (not to brag or anything)
I totally agree that Malden is not the best place to raise a family. However, I strongly disagree that Mayor Howard had anything to do with improving the city. Howard is a bad mayor that has become too settled in his position. I await the day someone runs against him. Most of Malden's progress can be attributed to State Rep Fallon (my former boss) and Sen. Tisei -- both of which are responsible for obtaining funds for Malden for various massive projects.
Anyway, Mike, the crimes you listed were scary. I don't specifically remember hearing about them, but now I'm completely horrified. I think I'll be buying a home far removed from Malden.
I'm with you Laura in that I'm a big fan of Fallon and Tisei. Naturally due to your relationship you would know more, but I'm a fan. I was sure to vote for them both on election day (even though that had nobody running against them...haha)
Boy, did I plan Jin's life or what? :D
Laura while I agree that Fallon and Tisei have done great things for the city of Malden, you still can't take away what Howard has done for Malden... I do know without him there wouldn't be 5 bright shiny new schools for the kids that live in the best city in Mass to go to... If you look back at past Mayors in Malden you see a lot of Lame Duck Mayors who enjoyed the job just because they had a cool title in front of their name... (and possibly to get out drunk driving charges)... I'm not sure which mayor it was , but the dumbest Malden Mayor ever is the one that thought it would be a bright idea to build city hall in the middle of Pleasant St. going through the heart of Malden Square!!!
hey kevin davis, you watching movies doesnt show you anything about boston life! it is not near as bad as is used to be and mike i just want you to know that life in malden has gotten much better
